Saint-Chrysostome (St. Chrysostome) This village was originally called Saint-Joseph in honour of Joseph (Madgitte) Arsenault and Joseph (League) Arsenault, the fathers of most of the founding couples. Older people sometimes called it the Village des Joe. The northern side of the community later became known as the Village de Joe League since Joseph (League) Arsenault (1744-1833) settled there when he came to join his children after having been ban- ished from Malpeque (see the ballad, pp. 11-13). English- speaking settlers nicknamed him “Joe League and a Half.” The name was changed around 1850 to Saint-Chrysostome in honour of Saint John Chrysostom (c. 340-407 A.D.), one of the Fathers of the Church. The area is also referred to as Rocky Point. Saint-Gilbert (St. Gilbert) Around 1875 this part of the parish was named after the patron saint of Gilbert Bernard, one of the early settlers. Saint-Hubert (St. Hubert) Around 1893, this community was named after Hubert Arsenault (c. 1814-1892), the father of several of the men who founded the area. Originally it was called MclIsaac Road after Angus Mclsaac, one of the founders of the village of Richmond. This name is still in use. Saint-Philippe (St. Philip) The community became known as Saint-Philippe around 1870, no doubt in honour of one of the two patron saints of the parish. Urbainville For a long time, the official name of this village was Egmont Bay Road, even though it was, and still is, known locally as Portage. With the opening of the village post office in 1896, it was renamed Urbainville as a tribute to Urbain Arsenault (1808-1901), the oldest man in the community and one of the pioneers. Mont-Carmel Parish No matter how hard you look, you won’t find a mountain anywhere nearby! The village was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin under the name Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel (Our Lady of Mount Carmel). Originally, however, the early pio- neers called their new settlement Le Grand Ruisseau (“Large Stream”). Oral tradition kept this name alive for a long time.
