10. Léon and Marie Arsenault “Of course, I will fetch you that golden moon from the Long-Toothed Mother.” The king said: “Whatever you need to accomplish this task, I'll give it to you.” “The only thing I need is a little bag of salt” said Little Jack. Little Jack headed for the house where the Long-Toothed Mother lived. When he got there, he climbed on the roof and hid close to the chimney. In the morning, the Long-Toothed Mother got up and made some porridge for breakfast. The girls were not getting up. She called to them: “Girls, get up! Girls, get up!” After a while, she went to the bedroom to get them out of bed. Meanwhile, Little Jack took the bag of salt and dumped it into the porridge. Well, the Long-Toothed Mother and her two daughters went to eat the porridge, but it was not edible, it was too salty! “Oh! this porridge is awful!” One of the girls said: “You've put in it all the salt that we had in the house!” “No”, she said, “I hardly salted it at all.” “But it's not edible!” All day they drank water, drank water, and drank water. By nightfall, the water buckets were empty. The Long-Toothed Mother said to the girls: “Take the buckets and go fill them up at the fountain.” It was very dark, so the girls said: “We're scared!” “Oh don’t worry”, said the Long-Toothed Mother, “I will throw the golden moon by the chimney and it will light your way.” -36-
