18. Emilie Arsenault Blacquiere Emily, born on 30 January 1917, was named after her paternal grandmother. She attended school up to grade 8 having among her teachers her sister Matilda and her future sister-in-law, Eugénie Gallant. Emily says that she was anxious to go out to earn a salary. When she was 15 years old, and although her mother tried to discourage her, she went to do housework for two months for Frank F. Arsenault, in Urbainville, for the nice sum of $8.00 a month. It was hard work for a young girl. She remembers baking large batches of bread every second day, doing the laundry on the washboard and cleaning this large farmhouse. Emily worked as a housemaid mainly in Summerside, for some time at Uncle Jéréme (a Gonzague) Arsenault, but mainly in English speaking families such as Everett Bagan, Walter Darby and Thane Campbell. The latter became Premier of the Island as did his son, Alex B. Campbell. _ i The Blacquiere Family in 1962. @ From left to right: Leo, Emily, Betty, David and Ronnie. 70
