18. Emilie Arsenault Blacquiere In 1937, Emily left the Island for New York City where her sister Corinne was living. There she first found employment as a housemaid in a Jewish family and then as a waitress in a restaurant. She loved New York but she had to leave after 15 months. This was during the years of the Depression and it was not easy for a Canadian to obtain a working visa. After a brief stay in Montreal, she came back to the Island and eventually met Leo Blacquiere, son of Moise Blacquiere and Philoméne Gallant of Summerside. Leo soon had to leave the Island as he joined the army the year the Second World War started. Emily went to meet him in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where they were married on 27 April 1940. After the war, they settled in Summerside where Leo was employed in the provincial civil service as Registrar of Deeds for Prince County. At the end of the 1950's, Emily returned to the work force as a saleswoman in the children's wear department of Holman's of P.E.I. A jovial person, Emily adores listening to music and is a fine story-teller. Her stories and anecdotes about the people of Maximeville are always well appreciated. She is also a very caring person alway present in time of need. When a relative or a friend is hospitalized, or when there is death in the family, you can always depend on Emily's comforting visits. Like her mother, Emily is very talented with her hands, excelling in crocheting, knitting, quilting and hooking mats. Her work has won her many prizes in handicraft exhibitions in Summerside and in Abram's Village. Emily has earned a reputation as a fine Bridge player and enjoys playing Duplicate Bridge. Like her husband Leo, she enjoys entertaining, particularly when it involves playing cards. For many years now, they have been spending their summers in a camper-trailer at the Moonlight Campground in Cape Egmont enjoying the open air and their many neighbours. Lately, Emily has become very much interested in birds and loves to feed them. Children: 1) Elizabeth (Betty) (30 August 1941) married James Campbell on 10 October 1964 (divorced).
