20. Aline Arsenault Poirier Aline met her husband, soldier and school-teacher Ulric Poirier, son of Philippe Poirier and Julie-Anne Gallant from Mont Carmel, in Montreal, while he was on leave from the army. Although Ulric and Aline had been raised only a few miles away from each other, they didn't know each other before meeting in the province of Quebec. “At that time, the village of Mont Carmel was considered far from Maximeville”, says Aline. It was a place they only went to about once a year, usually for the parish summer picnic. Upon his release from the army, Ulric returned home to Mont-Carmel where he became the manager of the Mont Carmel Fishermen’s Union. Aline and Ulric were married on 23 October 1947 and the following year they built their home close to the shore in Mont Carmel, next to the Fishermen’s Union's lobster factory. Aline played a significant role in her new adopted community. She was for a time chairman of the Mont Carmel school district Home and School Association, and for many years she was the secretary of the local chapter of the Altar Women Society. She was the one responsible for introducing the Red Cross water safety swimming courses in Mont Carmel and for a number of years she coordinated the meals served by the women of Mont Carmel at the Egmont Bay and Mont Carmel Agricultural Exhibition. Aline also did a lot of volunteer work for the Acadian Pioneer Village, a community project that helped the tourism industry get started in the Evangeline region in 1967. Like her mother and sisters, Aline enjoys doing handicrafts. In the 1970's, she took weaving courses and bought a loom. She sold most of her work at the handicraft boutique at the Acadian Pioneer Village where she also worked for a few summers. She also enjoys knitting and hooks beautiful floor mats.
