Ellen Smallman 1937 Ellen Horne Smallman was born in Bloomfield, P.E.I., in 1871. Her parents, Sara Gavin and Robert Horne, were formerly from Glasgow, Scotland. She married James P. Smallman of Knutsford and of this union five sons, namely Dan, Arthur, Albert, Beecher, and Edgar and five daughters, namely, Eva, Edith, Hazel, Helen, and Margaret were born. She also cared for Leigh Chisholm from childhood and looked upon him as another member of her household. Ellen also cared for her two grandchildren, Emma and Aubrey, after their school was destroyed by the Halifax Explosion, December 6, 1917. They lived with her and her already large family for one year and attended school in Knutsford. Their home was also used as a post office, a Maternity Home run by girls, and joyful place to gather. She was a faithful member of the Knutsford Baptist Church, also a life member of the Missionary Society and served as treasurer for a number of years. Active in Community affairs and was a life member of the Knutsford Women’s Institute. She was a Christian woman of many fine traits, including a kind and cheerful personality.
