Another Welcome Party was held for a British War Bride November 31st, 1946. The party was held at the home of Mrs. Dan Smallman. All meetings and most parties were held at members’ homes. They would just go down the list of who had it last, and so on. However, some meetings would have 13 members attend and one woman who believed the number to be unlucky would
move her chair into the hallway. A farewell party was held for a member who was leaving the district, Iva (Yeo) and Avard Shaw.
It is an interesting fact scotch tape had not been invented, so any tear in a book or photo was either stitched with thread or held together with straight pins. Annual reports for the Department of Agriculture 1941-42-43 were attached to a book and held together by straight pins.
Many young ladies joined the Knutsford Women’s Institute, before getting married. They had to
attend one meeting before joining and six meetings before being in good standing. Teachers who joined were usually appointed as the secretary treasurer.
The Rural Beautification Society was established in 1946. The idea was to increase interest in improvement and care of farms, homes and community. After the war, many properties were in sad state. But now, tourists visiting the Island, since then have been known to comment on how clean and well-kept the Island is, and, inquired whether people are to keep their lawns cut on a
specific day.
A round table discussion in 1947 was held on Farm/ Home Rural Beautification, and home decorating. Roll call at next meeting would be the exchange of seeds. Also, a glass had been
broken at the area convention by mistake: 79 cents will be given to replace.
