had been received; it just needed to be signed and sent back to the office. It was decided not to start in the fall but starting day would be May 15, 2004. Signs will be placed every 5K with the
KWI’s name on them.
Letters were written to the Prime Minister and federal MPs in support of maintaining rural mail delivery. Another was written to the Provincial WI office asking that the WI lobby chain stores and government institutions to use Atlantic beef. Also, a letter was presented at the Area Convention regarding health care in West Prince and then forwarded to the local MLAs. A letter was written to the premier and the Minister of Health expressing disappointment on the closure
of the emergency department at the O’ Leary Community Hospital.
2005 was The Year of the War Brides and a sunshine box was packed for Margaret Elliott, a war bride living in the Knutsford community. Joan Smallman made a beautiful quilt to be added to
the items in the box.
In September, a House and Garden Tour organized by the KWI members included afternoon tea at the community centre after the house tour. It was a success and $500 was presented to Queen
Elizabeth Hospital Equipment Fund during a telecast on Eastlink TV.
A certificate of appreciation recognizing 50 years of service to the women’s institute was given to Freda Woodside. A plaque was also presented to Fairley Yeo recognizing her untiring effort and dedication with regard to renovations at the Community Centre and the most successful
House and Garden Tour.
International Affairs Convener, Lorraine Harris, gave an update on world matters at a regular monthly meeting. In February 2006, an old-fashioned quilting bee was held. The completed quilt was donated at the Spring is in the Air Gala Dinner and sold for $600. The following December in 2006, an electric range was donated and installed at the community centre, a gift from Joyce and Norman MacDougall. Also, $500 was donated to the institute by Douglas Gard and Larry Beaupre in memory of Tommy and Novella Harris, Foster and Jean Harris and Verna
Milligan.
In November, $470.00 in prize money was collected from the Rural Beautification Competition. Sunshine boxes were delivered to two institute members who were ill, and a rose bowl was
presented to Vera MacArthur, last surviving charter member of the KWI, on her 95" birthday. A
