EXTRACTS FROM HENRY J. CUNDALL’S DIARY, RELATING TO HIS VISITS TO NEW LONDON AND CASCUMPEQUE,
1854-1860.
Saturday, 18th Nov’r, 1854. Dull, cloudy & mild. Mr. Graham’s house all day settling with tenants. Sunday, 19th Nov’r. Raining and warm. Crossed McLeod’s Ferry & went to Epis’l Church—Mr. Meek the minister of the Parish. Three miles from Graham’s. Went to Morning & Evening Service, & dined & took tea at Mr. Meek’s. Left there at about 7 o’clock, raining very hard and very dark, could see nothing but the sky for a great part of the way. Mrs. Meek invited us to stay very strongly but we thought it better to leave. Recrossed ferry and got to Graham’s, our topcoats and trousers completely drenched.
1856 Wednesday, October 15, 1856. Overcast. Dined with Mr. Deblois. Left at 2 p.m. with him for our Western Tour in waggon & two horses, one hired from Butcher. Fed horses at Wheatley River, then on by Fyfe’s Bridge to Graham’s, arr’g about 6 p.m. Cold day. Thursday, Oct. 16. Bright & pleasant at Graham’s settling with tenants etc. Walked to the Post Office in Ev’g with Mr. DeBlois. Friday, Oct. 17th. Bright & very pleasant, settling with tenants. At 3 p.m. Mr. DeB. left for Town & to return tomorrow. Tenant from Irishtown, Lot 20, told of a tremendous hailstorm at that place in July last, destroying and cutting down all the potato tops and grain, breaking great quantities of glass in the houses & marking the boards as if hammered with a hammer. Stones of 11/2 inch square fell, and the Thunder & Lightning was awful in the extreme, causing many to believe that the last day had come. Saturday, Oct. 18. Bright and a most beautiful day-very few on business today. Amused myself with sketching Graham’s house, reading, and Danon with the gun to the woods after partridges. Mr. DeB. ret’d from Town about 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19th. Raining. Crossed Ferry & went to New London Episc’l Church. Mr. Meek preached a very excellent sermon. Dined at Mr. M’s after, ret’d to Graham’s at sundown—~raining a little. Mr. Lockerby of Cavendish gave me a lift in his waggon from the Ferry to the Presbyterian Church. Monday, Oct. 20th. Misty a.m. Left Graham’s in morn’g with Mr. DeB. for
