Robert to Martha July 6 I have left school now and am in Henry Cundall 's office. He is a surveyor and land agent. I went to him as soon as my hand got well, and I like it very much. I go at ten in the morning, go home for my dinner at twelve, go back at one, and home again at four. So you will see that we have very short hours. Mr. Cundall is very kind and I like him better every day. When first I went I painted eight maps of the Island. Mr. Cundall gave me one, and sent the rest to be framed and varnished. I am now copying a map of Charlottetown . The town is swarming with Ministers, as all the dissenters are holding their conferences in this town. When two or three hundred of the Ministers were landing a boy who works at Ross's Weekly printing office went to the office and told them that the wharf was white with black chokers. Eddie is a very queer little fellow, and he is always trying to run away. He is very fond of playing at horses and he never gets tired of it: he takes a box or a chair and loads it with all the boots he can find, and then says, "Gee, gee," and pushes it along. I made him something to play with for a horse: it was a long piece of wood with a piece of board the shape of a horse's head at the end. He used to put it under his legs and ride about, and was as proud of it as the best rocking horse. He used to put its nose in water. It is very hard to keep Eddie in, as he is a great climber. We fasten the back gate, but he climbs up and under it in a few minutes and then runs off as hard as he can go. Tom to Martha July 21 The Confirmation took place last Sunday week. There were 36 girls and nine boys confirmed besides me. Mama , Patty, Sarah, and I went up to Uncle's last Monday week. We started from town in the ferry boat at about half past nine, and Chad was waiting for us at the ferry with a horse and wagon. We had a very nice drive, and got up to Long Creek about dinner time. The strawberries are very plentiful, and we had as many as we could eat. Josy and I went out to catch oysters once or twice and got a good many. We came home again on Saturday morning, and Robert, Margaret Ellin and Willie went back with Chad to have their turn in the country. I believe I never told you what a kind friend Robert and I have in a young gentleman named Ned Hodgson ,5 an attorney. He is Robert's Sunday School teacher, and he lent us a great number of nice books. On the day of the Confirmation he took me home with him and presented me with a very handsome prayer book, its clasp and edges electro-plated, and with beautiful illuminated pages. Martha to Tom It gave me much pleasure to find you receiv'd the blessing of the Bishop, on your confirming the promise enter'd upon, for you, at your baptism by your sponsors. I doubt not the meaning of the rite has been explained to you, and that you have, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, entered upon the covenant with sincere and earnest intention of walking in the commandment of God , and faith in His Son, our Blessed Lord and only Saviour Jesus Christ. May you be enabled to walk steadily in the same whatever your situation or circumstance may be, until you shall be call'd from this world of sin and 124
