4 :- Stewart Ross

For a politician, StewartRoss is a man of few words. He claims he did not speak once inside the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island during his 15-year term as the Liberal member for Queens 4th. And he still is not a talkative soul.

Mr. Ross was raised on a farm established in the early I 800s by his great-great-grandparents, settlers from Skye. He brought up his family, and still lives on a property two farms away which he purchased over 60 years ago.

I fished 52 seasons. Every year. Whether there was an election or not... . See, I was half-retired when I got into politics. I wasn’t expecting too much out of it. I had more work than I could do home. I enjoyed it. That’s about all.

I’ll tell you one thing I didn’tlike. I didn’t like, in road gangs or anything, taking everybody Liberal. There was young fellas, you know; you knew very well their background was Conservative. If they needed a job, I just wanted them to have it, and that’s who got it. I didn’t care whether they were Liberals. I’d take Conservatives. And I didn’t fire anybody on my account just because they were Conservatives. I think that’s why they were so nice to me.

Politicking

It’s a kind of a bummer’s job, number one. I never looked for that. There was six people drove in here one evening ’fore election, and they asked me...would I put up my name. And I said yes, I would. So, that was that... . Walter Shaw won the election that time, when I got into politics, [in] ’59. Eight Liberals and 22 Conservatives. Liked him good. I liked all
