Mary Ross Collection Comptoris Mill, Belle River . We ran the lobster factory for 10 or 15 years. I don't remember just how long. We had five or six boats. It was a company affair. Packing lobsters was an easy job. You see, they'd be all got ready. The shell and everything off them. We sold them to H.W. Longworth [in Charlottetown ]. We had a good name for our lobsters. We put the tails [in], fixed them nicely, put some hash down in between those tails, and fixed the claws on the top as nicely as we could. We had good lobsters. We had a good market for them. Before the railroad was built, there was vessels in Belle River Harbour you know. We used to send the lobster cases to town on the vessels. That was before the mill got working in full operation. But once that started they gave up the lobsters. So there was a big difference between different periods of time. I got married way back in 1908. Then I started a factory of my self to raise kids. So I had five. And Dan is one of them. 96 BELFAST PEOPLE
