Threshing the grain, in Eldon c.1920.
I came home in [1918]. That winter I went to the agricultural college in Truro for a six—months course. It was part of the VLA [Veterans’ Land Act] arrangement. And I come [home] then. I was on the small farm at home for several years, until 1928, I believe it was, or ’29. This place was for sale and I bought it. Sixty acres. Well, I made a living on it. Brought up five children. Lots of hard work. Sleepless nights.
I had Frank MacDonald’s place rented before we moved up here, and I lived there for a year. Frederick was born down there. Helen was born the first year we moved up here, and [then] the other children. Roberta was only 10 months old when her mother died. She was the youngest of five.
Country Doctor
Dr. Martin was the doctor when Helen and Frederick were born. Dr. Judson from Alexandra, Pownal, came when Louise was born.
This Dr. Judson. I brought him over here for Louise’s birth. That was the 29th day of March and there was very, very heavy snow at that time, that winter. The day before this there was a big thaw came and it cleaned the ice all off... . Now, somebody was here the day before and said Dr. Judson
