various schools and in the short six week period made an amazing showing with the various school choruses. The cost of drawing up the syllabus was $25, and the cost of instruction of one hour per week in each of seven sc‘hools was $25 per week. Brackley Beach and Spring Park had their own teachers. Mr. MacNutt’s own composition “Take me to a Green Isle” was included in the first Syllabus. Readers may be interested to know that Mr. MacNutt is now Organist and Choir Director at Saint Thomas Anglican Church in Toronto. Miss Dorothy Allen, Mus. Bac. from Mount Allison University was the first Adjudicator. Her pleasing personality and competent adjudications were an inspiration to all. She has her degree in voice, piano, and theory, and has given many public recitals in singing and piano, and taken many soprano leads in Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Miss Allen studied at the Julliard School of Music and at Columbia University in New York. She was a member of the famous Columbia University Choir and made rec'ords for the library there. Miss Allen was very pleased with the quality of talent displayed at the 1946 festival. There were 126 entries from nine districts, and all sessions and the final concert were well attended, and much interest was shown not only by the sponsoring districts, but by the citizens of Charlottetown as well. The Festival was under the patronage of His Honour, Lieut. Gov. J. A. Bernard and Mrs. Bernard, Premier J. Walter Jones and Mrs. Jones, His Worship, Mayor B. Earle Mac- Donald and Mrs. MacDonald, Dr. Lloyd Shaw, Director of Education, and Mrs. Shaw. At the final concert remarks were made by Miss Allen, Premier Jones (our first life member), and the President. At the annual meeting in June 1946 it was decided to open the Festival to the whole Province and to form an organization called the Prince Edward Island Music Festival Association to sponsor the Annual Festivals. A constitution and bylaws were drawn up, aims were clarified, and the following officers were elected:— Hon. President —— Dr. Lloyd W. Shaw, Director of Education; President — Mrs. Preston Beck, Central Royalty; 1st Vice-President — Mrs. Preston Rodd, Harrington; 2nd Vice—President —— Mrs. Am- brose Steele, Morel]; 3rd Vice-President —- Mrs. Julian Herring, Borden; Treasurer — Mrs. Victor Hudson, Parkdale; Secretary — Mrs. Nadine Archibald, Central Royalty. The 1947 Festival was a huge success. The Syllabus was pre- pared by Miss Dorothy Allen who also adjudicated the classes. There were nine sessions at this Festival and it ran from the official open- ing on Monday night until the Friday night concert of winners. At this concert in Prince of Wales the audtiorium was filled and standing room was not available. After the concert Col. and Mrs. Elliot Full opened their home for the first Music Festival reception, entertaining Miss Allen, members of the Festival executive and their husbands, and the Music teachers. Each successive year has shown steady growth in entries and interest and many early aims have been realized, but there are still districts and individuals not taking advantage of this educational and enjoyable feature, and we still have much for which to strive. -—— 103 ~-
