Peoples Cem., daughter of Matthew Callbeck and Charlotte Newsome . See Callbeck history. Jim Arbing came to North Tryon from Freetown in 1900. He purchased the land that is now owned by the Gordon Cutcliffe family, east of the Jim Chisholm property. He opened a blacksmith shop on the south west corner of his land adjacent to the Chisholm property. Arbing and Chisholm became involved in a bitter and expensive legal dispute regarding the location of the line dividing their properties. Jim Arbing , perhaps anticipating the outcome of the dispute, entered into an agreement with George Callbeck to purchase the land and house across the road that had once belonged to Phoebe and Martha Muir- head. He sold his house in 1902 to Gordon Hudson and moved across the road to about where the Donald Lord house now stands. He moved his blacksmith shop across and up the road to the site where Sheldon Dixon 's garage now stands. Jim Arbing continued to serve the public from this loction for close to 40 years. Jim and Nettie Arbing were the school janitors. Mrs. Arbing was considered a very stern, sober lady by some of the children in the community. Her appearance and her housekeeping were immaculate. Her hair was pulled back into a tight bun, and her black dress was covered with a white crisply starched apron. The school children carried buckets of water from the pump in the Arbing's back porch to the cooler at the school. The bedroom off the kitchen, visible from the porch, was always impeccable. The plump white bed pillows never changed their appearance from day to day and Mrs. Arbing never appeared to work, she was always in her favourite chair, rocking and watching while the water was being pumped. The children were very aware they were not to spill a drop on Mrs. Arbing 's spotless floor. The Arbing blacksmith shop was torn down when the Trans was built in 1952. The James Arbing house was sold and moved to Mrs. Richie Cameron's on the in Augustine Cove . Jim Arbing and Nettie Callbeck had 3 children: Harry Price b. 23 Feb 1898, killed Apr 1911, at the North Tryon school when the window fell on his neck. +OHve b. 14 Oct 1902. +Ivyb. 23 Aug 1904.
