John and Jane took ship in 1820 with 7 of their children at Bo'ness, Scotland , and sailed to Miramichi, NB. From there they proceeded to Charlottetown where they found temporary shelter at the Wind-Mill Hotel. From Charlottetown the family and all their belongings emĀ¬ barked in an open craft up the West River , however the craft went adrift, and they landed at Samuel Dawson 's farm. The family continued their trek, walking through the forest, each carrying some provisions on their backs, to Crapaud , then on to Tryon , where they rented a farm on the from Fred B. Holland . The following year, the family moved to Cape Traverse where they bought the James MacNaught farm and eventually built the Bell Homestead , later called Bell's Point. The farm was mostly wooded. Each year John and his sons cleared about three acres of woodland, stumped the land with the help of horses, then planted barley, wheat, and potatoes. The Royal Gazette , on the 15 Oct 1839, lists John Bell of Cape Traverse , as a fenceviewer, a person who settles boundary disputes.
