The relationship between the Woods and Thomas Dawson was so bitter that Thomas tried, days before his death, to have his will changed to exclude the name of William Wood, his daughter’s father-in—law, as an executor. Thomas was not successful. The AttorneyGeneral, rather than attaching a codicil to the will, made deletions with his pen which could not be confirmed by the dying man. Thomas’ will could not be probated nor recorded, although the latter was done after 1900 for purely historical purposes. Thomas left his widow Frances in poor circumstances, and contrary to his injunction, she remarried again, tw1ce.

Thomas was a man of strong constitution, powerful frame, and in the prime of life; but flesh and blood could not sustain the test to which he had subjected his physical powers. He caught a severe cold in Dec 1803 which terminated in quinsy, an abcess in the area surrounding the tonsils, and in the absence of proper medical care, it settled in his shoulders and arms. Thomas died on the fifth anniversary of sailing from Ireland. He lies in an unmarked grave in the old Protestant Cemetery on University Avenue in Charlottetown. His children, some of whom were quite prosperous, neglected to put a stone to his memory.
