Samuel was also a farmer and, on 20 Apr 1827, he acquired 300 acres of land from the Holland family one mile from Victoria. This land was later owned by Brent Wood and, in 1992, is part of the John Thompson farm. Samuel inherited his father's stern religious convictions. He was an educated man who enjoyed good literature, especially Robert Burns' poetry. However, when he embraced religion, all worldly beauty was cast aside. This religious zeal was passed on to his son, Tommy . A nephew of Tommy 's has written: He ( Tommy ) was married to Betsy Leard , she was a saint, but why she didn't murder Uncle Tommy I don't know. Tommy , who was known as Tommy the Good, would not allow the women in his family to put any adornment on their hats, in their hair, or on their dresses. Neither would he permit houseplants to decorate the house. Tommy followed in the footsteps of his father, making the steps even deeper!
