Richard was 2 years old when he left Ireland. In early manhood he moved to Tryon, and although it is reported that he built the mill at North Tryon for his nephew, Thomas Ives, no record can be found to show that Richard built, owned, or operated the Ives’ Mill. However, there are reliable records that he acquired a tract of land quite near the mill, which in 1992 is owned by Vance Dixon and Sons. It was here that Richard and Elizabeth settled and had their family. Richard was also a Justice of the Peace. Richard settled three of his sons Thomas, Henry, and John, on his North Tryon holdings; Richard moved to Nail Pond.
