while living with and working for Frank Lang at the North Tryon Butter Factory. Elmer became manager of the butter factory in 1920. He boarded with George Wood after Frank Lang died.

When Lila Burke graduated from Prince of Wales College she began a career in teaching, first at Dunstaffnage, then in East Royalty. After three years Lila decided to change her vocation. She applied to and was accepted by the school of nursing. Lila spent a busy summer preparing to enter nursing. At that time, uniforms for nurses in training had to be made, not bought at the local store. However, during the summer, Lila contacted a severe flu virus and Dr. Yeo refused to permit her to begin her studies. Disappointed with the doctors decision, Lila had no choice but to put away her nurse’s uniforms and return to teaching.

Lila placed her name on the list of available teachers at the Educa- tion office and within a matter of days she chose Lady Fane School. She was pleased to have a small school and one that was close to her friend, Hildred Howatt of Augustine Cove. It was while teaching at Lady Fane that Lila met and married Elmer Gamble. Their wedding ceremony was at 6 am. so they would have a whole day for their honeymoon. Lila, commenting on her wedding, claimed this was one of the few occasions that Elmer was on time! Lila and Elmer moved to North Tryon to a house they purchased from Gordon Hudson and where their three children Were born. The family moved in 1930 to a new house in Albany across the road from the North Tryon Butter Factory.
