Richard and Mary lived in North Tryon, one mile from John. Richard, when a young man, lost an eye, the result of an injury suffered while working in the woods. Mary’s mother, Margaret Craig, lived with the family. The Richard Hatley farm is in A. Craig’s name on the 1863 map and is at the end of the Ives’ Mill road.
