jiowatt Family

James Howat lived at Tom More, Banffshire, Scotland, in the early 17005. He was employed with the Innes family and then possibly as a coachman or gardener to the Grant family of Arndilly who had a Town House in Keith.

James bap. in the Parish of Banff, 14 Aug 1724, d. 1811, probably the son of the above mentioned James, 1st. m. 14 Jan 1743 Isabel Stevenson. There are no recorded births from this marriage.James 2nd. m. Margaret Symon(d), b. 1738, Parish of Grange, d. Covehead; James 3rd. m. 1782 Widow Marguerite Holleri Mutard. See Muttart history.

James was in the King’s Navy, and while travelling through the Boston area was impressed by the spirit of the Americans. WhenJames returned to Scotland he obtained a small boat, loaded his family and possessions, and sailed in 1775 for North America. When passing Cape Breton, in error he sailed on the north side rather than the south and landed in Covehead, PEI, instead of Boston.

James, Margaret, and five of their children made the crossing. A sixth child was born in Covehead. Margaret died at Covehead, and James moved to Tryon in 1783 and leased land from the Holland’s. James and Widow Mutard lived on the Point Road, Tryon, where Howatt’s Fruit Farm is in 1992.

James Howatt left the following will dated 4 Sept 1803:

To my son Peter the farm where I now reside and all things in my possession.

To my wife yearly and every year during her natural life 200 weight of flour,
