Artie was adopted when 16 months old by his uncle W.W. Lord and his wife Ann Lea. He moved with them to Charlottetown at 5 years of age where he attended a private school, Central Academy, later PWC, and then Mt. Allison Academy. He left school at 16 to spend 3 years sailing on his uncle’s ships, trading between England and Charlotte- town. He entered into partnership with his uncle in 1856 under the firm name of W.W.
