Alexander is listed in the 1880 census as a cabinet maker. Alex owned the Gouldmp Mills from 1889 to 1891, and again from 1895 to 1899. He then purchased Lord’s store in Tryon from his brother Robert, and Alex and Annie moved to Tryon to what is now the Jack Nelder house.
