David assumed re- sponsibilities on the farm on December 18, 1863, but his years in - _ " farming were few. David died from a farm accident on June 23, 1867, the result of be- ing caught in a thresh— ing machine. Left with a young family, Caroline managed both the children and the farm until her son, David John, was old enough to take over the operation.
