a shape of a person and laid it down on the road and took a chunk of rope and put it across the should- ers and tied it on. Each of them went into the woods, one on each side of the road. They heard Alfie coming anyway. When he got up real close, they tightened the rope and the ghost raised up
in front of him. There was just one terrible screech I guess. Lorne said, "if it was in the daytime, his shadow would never have kept up
-to him". But even after that, Alfie would never stay at Earl's after dark. Home after dark. 75 He never mentioned ghosts again! '
Despite all of this, the work ethic was very strong. -The Workers had a strong sense of pride'and wanted to work. One person I interviewed noted that at that time the employees felt guilty if a‘ company went banhupt. They would blame themselves because they I ’ had-not worked hard enough. 76 One person noted with pride that "They seem to have a lot of problems with packs new that they didn't_ have then." 77 Most of the people I interviewed described certain . people as hard workers. Joe Conway'Was always noted as one of the best fishermen ever. He was supposed to have set a local record by landing 5,553 pounds of lobster in one day when, at the time, land— . ' 78
