     Prince Edward Island forms Military District No. 12 of 
     
     the Dominion. The authorized strength of active militia in 
     
     the district is: One squadron of Jig/z! horse, 77; artillery (one 
     
     regiment of three companies on the higher establishment), 
     
     365; infantry (one regiment of eight companies), 401; army 
     
     medial/tarps (one field ambulance unit), 90; total, 933—71 
     
     ofiicers, and 862 non—commissioned officers and men. The 
     
     district officer commanding resides at Charlottetown, where 
     
     his headquarters are. The militia have an up-to-date drill 
     
     hall, with armouries, social rooms, a permanent resident 
     
     care-taker, and all sanitary conveniences. 
     
    

    
     Prince Edward Island contributed a considerable contin- 
     
     gent to the troops in South Africa during the Boer War of 
     
     1899—1901, most of whom were drawn from the militia.
