PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.
WILLIAM P. CALLAHAN, a successful farmer and enterprising merchant at Ebbs Fleet, Prince county, was born in Lot 2, this county, on May 21, 1863, and is a son of William and Ellen (Pendergast) Calla- han. He received a good district school education in his youth and was reared on the paternal homestead, there also imbibing the spirit of industry. economy and sterling in- tegrity which have characterized his subse- quent life. ' He is now the owner of two hundred and forty acres of choice land in Lot 2, about one hundred and twenty of which have been placed under cultivation and which were formerly cleared by the sub- ject himself. He has in many ways im- proved the place and here gives special at- tention to the raising of thoroughbred live stock, Shorthorn cattle, Yorkshire hogs and Percheron horses being his specialties. Dur- ing the past fourteen years he has done considerable trading in this locality, being a dealer in machinery, carriages, harness, etc., at both Ebbs Fleet and Tignish. He has been successful in this line and enjoys a large and increasing trade. In 1901 he was offered the management for the prov- ince of a trading company doing a large and important business there, but which po- sition he could not accept. Besides his other duties Mr. Callahan does a large insurance business, being local representative for the Canada Life, the Casualty and Boiler, and accident and sickness insurance, also repre- sentating seven fire insurance companies. He also does a considerable amount of trading . in horses and farm produce in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, which he has found profitable. During the past two years he has invested in real estate in the West, prin- cipally at the towns of Wetaskiwin and Daysland, in the province of Alberta. Mr.

Callahan is indefatigable in his efforts, prac- tical in his methods and bears an excellent reputation for the progressive attitude he assumes, not only as to his own personal af- fairs, but public affairs in general. He ex- ercises a definite influence in his community and deserves the enviable position he holds among his fellow citizens. He supports the Conservative party, but has at no time been
an applicant for public office. In religion he is a member of the Palmer Road parish of the Roman Catholic church. His frater- nal affiliations are with Palmer Road Branch, No. 294, Catholic Mutual Benefit Association, of which branch he was one of the organizers about ten years ago. Dur- ing the first three years of its existence Mr. Callahan held the honorable position of president, having been unanimously elected for his second and third years. In I899 he was elected a delegate to represent the branch at the convention to be held in Ni- agara Falls, in August, 1900, in which con- vention he took a prominent part. He also was the founder and is now a member of Division No. 4, Ancient Order of Hiber- nians, of which he was the first president. He is president for this year (1906) of the Tignish Farmers’ Institute, one of the largest and most important institutions in the whole province.
In 1889 Mr. Callahan married Miss Gertrude Doyle, a daughter of Peter and Bridget (Foley) Doyle, the former a farmer of Lot 7. Mr. and Mrs. Doyle were the'par- ents of four children, Thomas, Angelina, deceased, Lucena and Gertrude. To Mr. and Mrs. Callahan have been born the fol- lowing children: Maud, Josephine, Rus- sell, Ray, Austin, Frank, Florence, Marion and one that died in infancy.
