The subject of this sketch secured a good education in the district schools and has followed throughout his life the voca¬ tion to which he was reared, that of farm¬ ing. He is the owner of one hundred and eighty-five acres of fine land, sixty acres of which are in cultivation and on which are raised abundant crops of all cereals grown in this locality. Mr. Nicholson has lived on his present place all his life. He is therefore well known by all his neighbours and stands high in their opinion. In politics he is a Conservative, and in religion a Presbyterian. In 1882 Mr. Nicholson was united in marriage to Miss Jeanette Campbell , a daughter of Donald and Flora (Gillis) Campbell, the former a native of Apple- cross, Scotland , and the latter of the Isle of Skye . To Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were born five children, namely: Jessie, the sub¬ ject's wife; Flora; John; and Mary M. To Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson have been born three children, namely: John, who is en¬ gaged with the Gold Roof Mining Com¬ pany, at Butte, Montana ; and Donald C. and Alex N ., who are at home. W. J. Emery , an enterprising merchant and successful farmer in Lot 6 2, Queens county, was born at Wood Islands , this lot, on July 17, 1859, and is a son of John and Margaret (Hume) Emery. The paternal grandfather, Peter Emery , was a native of Perth , Scotland , and came to Prince Ed ¬ ward Island in 1801, settling near George¬ town, moving shortly afterward to Wood Islands , where he lived until his death, in 1879. He was the father of seven children, James, Peter, John, Ann, Mary, William and Robert. To the subject's parents were born five children, namely: Catherine, the wife of William Young , a farmer; Peter, now deceased, who married Miss McPher- son; John W., and two that died in infancy. John Emery owned a farm at Cross Roads, which he successfully operated until the time of his death in 1861. In politics he supported the Liberal party, and his religious affiliation was with the Pres¬ byterian church. W. J. Emery received a good district school education and has followed house building during the most of his life. He has twenty-five acres of land under the plow and on this he has resided since 1886. having formerly lived at Wood Islands , where he carried on shipbuilding and car¬ pentering. He is now engaged in carpen¬ tering and factory work, such as sash and door making, in which he has been quite successful, and during the past five years has also engaged to some extent in merchandis¬ ing. His homestead is well improved, the place having a fine dwelling, a substantial barn and other outbuildings, and although the farm is not as large as some others in the locality, it is considered one of the well kept and highly productive farms in the neighborhood. On October 26, 1881, Mr. Emery mar¬ ried Miss Isabella McRae , a daughter of John and Christina McRae, and to them have been born four children, namely: Ag¬ nes, who was educated at Prince of Wales College and is now engaged in teaching school; Cora and Jonetta , at home; and Peter J., who assists in the operation of tie home farm.
