About twenty-four years ago Mr. Shea began pay¬ ing attention to the packing of lobsters for market and he has given much effort to this pursuit since that time, having now about five thousand traps in actual service. He also does much deep sea fishing, especially for cod and herring, which he salts and ships to for¬ eign markets. He has been quite successful and is now engaged in the erection of a fine new residence, which will add much to the general appearance of the farm. In 1891 Mr. Shea married Miss Anna J. Callahan , daugh¬ ter of William and Ellen (Pendergrass) Cal¬ lahan, and to them have been born ten chil¬ dren, namely: William; Emma; Angus R.; James W.; Joseph H.; John C.; Francis R.; Ella; Mary Ann; and Clara Alice . In re¬ ligion Mr. Shea is a member of the Catholic church and also belongs to the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association. He is public spirited in his attitude toward local affairs and renders a hearty support to all movements promising to benefit his fellow men, enjoying at all times the sincere respect of those with whom he associates. John M. Doucette , an extensive and enterprising lobster packer at Waterford , Prince county, was born at , , Inverness county, Sco¬ tia, on May 4, 1849, tne son OI Paul and Catherine (Carmere) Doucette. The father was born in , came to Nova Scotia in an early day, establishing himself in the agricultural business in which he was fairly successful and spending the remainder of his days in Nova Scotia . He was the father of three children: Paul, a farmer in Nova Scotia ; Elizabeth, deceased; and the subject of this sketch. The latter received a good education in schools of his native locality and came to Prince Edward Island in 1872, settling in Lot 1, where he has during the subsequent years followed farming and fishing. He is the owner, of one hundred fifty acres of splendid land, which is maintained in the highest cultivation, and here he carries on a diversified system of farming, raising prac¬ tically all the crops which are common to this latitude. He is also very successful as a lobster fisher and packer, owning about two thousand traps, and exports annually large quantities of this delicious crustacean. He also gives some attention to deep sea fishing and salts down about eight tons of fish annually and cans large quantities of meats, vegetables and fruits. He is ener¬ getic and possesses good business ability so that he has been enabled to place his business upon a good permanent basis. In 1881 Mr. Doucette married Miss Rebecca Mackey , daughter of Thomas Mackey , and to them have been born twelve children: George, Annie, Katie, Clara, Patrick, Bertha, Wil ¬ fred, Fred, Ernie, Rebecca, Erena, and Thomas. In politics Mr. Doucette supports the Conservative party and has served ac¬ ceptably as school trustee. His fraternal relations are with the Catholic Mutual Ben¬ efit Association at and his re¬ ligious membership is with the Roman Catholic church of parish. Mr. Doucette is a hard-working man, takes an intelligent interest in local public affairs and enjoys the warm regard of all who know him.
