Robert Leard received his education in the schools of Tryon and at Charlottetown Academy, where he completed his studies at the age of eighteen years. He then engaged in teaching school, which he successfully continued for twenty years, after which he opened up a general mercantile business at Tryon which he has successfully operated for the past twenty-one years. He carries a full line of such articles as are required by the local trade and enjoys a large share of the public patronage. Mr. Leard is a justice of the peace and does the work of writing all legal documents for the people of Tryon and vicinity, being a commissioner for the taking of acknowledgements of deeds, tak- ing aflidavits for the Supreme Court and for probating wills. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, a Liberal in politics and an adherent of the Methodist church. Mr. Laird has twice been married. On August 25, 1860, he married Miss Mary Robblee, a daughter of Thomas Robblee, of Tryon, and to them were born six children: Melinda Jane, deceased; Reuben Sprague, who mar- ried Miss Maggie Moore and they now live in California; Ella Lea, the wife of James Morrison, of Tryon; Lyman Beecher, deceased; Robert Judson, now at Los Ange- les, California; Herbert Walter, deceased. Mrs. Mary Leard died on April 20, 1890, and. on June 8, 1892, Mr. Leard married Mrs. Isabella Sophia Gouldrup (nee Reid), daughter of William Reid, of Crapaud. Mrs. Leard died on April 30, 1898. Mr. Leard is a well known man throughout this section of Prince county and is popular with all who know him.
JOHN BELL MCFADYEN, a successful and well known farmer in Lot 28, was born in Augustine Cove on February 19, 1865,

a son of Neil and Jane (Bell) McFadyen. His grandfather, Neil McFadyen, who was born on the Isle of Mull, Argyleshire, Scot— land, in 1781, emigrated to Prince Edward Island and located at Augustine Cove, where he took up a tract of land and fol- lowed farming up to the time of his death, which occurred in 1833. He married Miss Margaret Campbell, who was a native of Argyleshire, Scotland, and whose death occurred in 1833, and to them were born four children: (I) Finley married Miss Isa- bella Campbell and they had eight children: John, deceased; Neil, who married Annie Gillis; Alex, deceased; Margaret; Christina; Jennie; Hector and Donald; (II) Hector married Miss Margaret Bell and had six children, namely: Neil, who married Eliza Lowther; Ann, who married Major Clark; Elizabeth, who married William Richards; Sarah, who married William Lowther; John, who married Emma Ramsey, and Jane, who married Neil Lowther; (III) Mary Ann became the wife of Duncan Mathison and they have eight children, namely: Margaret, who married Edward Lane; Ann; John, who married Jane McFadyen; Roderick, a lawyer of Mont-r real; Neil, who married Miss Van Iderstine; W'illiam; Elizabeth, who married Donald Campbell, and Hannah J., who died in infancy; (IV) Neil, the subject’s father, was born in Augustine Cove on October 28, 1828; was educated there and afterward taught school for some years. He then engaged in the general mercantile business, which, together with farming, he followed throughout his life, his death occurring in 1895. He was a member of the Church of Scotland. and in politics was a Liberal, hav- ing served acceptably as postmaster at Augustine Cove. On May 19, 1864, he married Miss Jane Bell, a daughter of John
