On August 18, 1898, Mr. Nor- ton married Miss Catherine K. Dewar, a daughter of Robert and Jessie (Dewar) Dewar, she having been born in Prince Edward Island on August 12, 1877, her parents also being natives of this Island. To Mr. and Mrs. Norton have been born two children: Robert H. and Edison L. Mr. Norton is a Liberal in politics but is not a seeker after the honours of public office. He and his wife are faithful and consistent members of the Christian church and lend their support to every movement having for its object the advancement of the commu- nity’s best interests, moral, social or edu- cational.
DANIEL J. MACDONALD, an enterprising merchant and public spirited citizen of Mur- ray River, Kings county, ‘was born at Cale- donia, Prince Edward Island, on April 4, 1871, and is a son of John and Catherine (Montgomery) MacDonald, the former a native of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, and the latter of Valley Field, Prince Edward Island. The father came to Prince Edward Island in about the year 1860 and here followed farming and merchandising, he being now engaged in the latter pursuit at Caledonia, where he is successful to a satis- factory degree. The paternal grandfather. Donald McDonald, also a native of the Isle of Skye, came to Prince Edward Island in 1860, and died near Caledonia.
Daniel J. MacDonald attended the dis- trict schools of his neighborhood and subse- quently entered Prince of Wales College in

' 1887, where he graduated the same year. After remaining at home a year he received a license to teach and was engaged in peda- gogical duties for two years. In 1891 he went to Boston, Massachusetts, and entered Comer’s Business College, where he grad- uated during 1891. He was employed in office work for a short time and then returned to Prince Edward Island and went into business with his father, being now occupied in the management in the Murray River branch store, his father managing the Caledonia business. In 1900 the father retired from the business at Murray River and the subject now continues as the sole proprietor of the business at that point. He carries a large and well selected line of all the staple goods in demand by the local trade and is in the enjoyment of a large patronage. Politically he is a Conservative, fratemally a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and the Canadian Order of Foresters and in religion is a member of the Presbyterian church. On July 30, 1902, Mr. MacDonald married Miss Carrie M. Van Iderstein, a daughter of William T.‘ and Melinda (Annear) Van Iderstein. Mrs. MacDonald was born at Montague, Prince Edward Island, on July 27, 1876, her par- ents being also natives of this Island.
JAMES JOSEPH HUGHES, M. P., a pros- perous merchant at Souris, Kings county, was born at St. Mary’s Road, Lot 61, Kings county, in 1856, and is a son of James and Jane (Irving) Hughes, both natives of County Armaugh, Ireland, the mother being, of Scottish descent. They were married in their native land and both are now deceased.
