HUGH MCLEAN, a progressive farmer of Lot 55, Kings county. was born in 1840 on the farm which he now owns and oper- ates, and is a son of Kenneth and Christie (Campbell) McLean. natives of Earlish, Isle of Skye, Scotland. The father came to Prince Edward Island in about 1830 and located at Belle River. About 183 5 he came to Lot 55, being one of the first four settlers in that locality, the land being in its original condition of wilderness. He brought the family goods in a boat up Fortune Bay and thence carried it by hand two miles over- land. He died here in 1878, at the age of sixty-seven years. He entered land and followed agricultural pursuits during all his active years. The subject’s mother, who bore the maiden name of Christie Camp- bell, was born on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. and several of her sisters also came to Prince Edward Island, settling in Valleyfield. She became the mother of the following chil- dren: Hugh, Malcolm, now deceased, for- merly of Boston, Massachusetts; Angus, de- ceased, who resided on Lot 55; and Donald, also deceased.

Hugh McLean attended the district schools during his boyhood and was reared on the parental farmstead, early being in- ured t0 the strenuous labor incident to farm life. He has devoted all the active years of his manhood to agricultural ef- forts, in which he has been measurably suc- successful. He married Miss Jessie Mac- Kenzie, who died in 1901, and who was born at Dundas, this province, a daughter

of Jonathan and Ann (McLeod) MacKen- zie, both of whom were natives of Scot- land. To the subject and his wife were born the following children: Christie, who is the wife of Sewell Robertson, of West River, Lot 47; Annie May, the wife of Duncan Stewart, of Boston, Massachusetts; Eu- phemia. at home; Sarah C., wife of George M. Lively, of Boston. Massachusetts, died in 1906; Malcolm was a successful merchant at Balweyae, South Africa, but died in 1896, in Jameson’s raid, in which he was a vol- unteer; John Kenneth, is engaged in the lumber business at Nelson, British Co- lumbia; John Daniel is engaged in mining at Phoenix, British Columbia: Joseph Al< len resides at Boston, Massachusetts; Wil- liam died in British Columbia in 1904. In politics Mr. McLean gives his support to the Conservative party and his religious affil— iation is with the Presbyterian church. He is a progressive and public spirited citizen and is well liked by all who know him.

ALEXANDER GEORGE MACDONALD, who successfully operates a prosperous merchan- dise business at Annandale, Lot 56. King’s county, was born at Johnson's River, and is a son of Angus and Mary (Macdonald) Macdonald, the former of whom was born at Johnson's River, and there lived through- out his life, his death occurring at the age of sixty-five years. The paternal grandfa- ther. Allan Macdonald, who was also born at Johnson’s River, was connected with the Tracadie Macdonalds, while the subject’s mother, Mary Macdonald, was the daughter of James Macdonald, of Allesary, Prince Edward Island. who married Miss Mary McEachern, a daughter of John McEach-
