Smith. Donald McMillan was a member of the Presbyterian church and voted with the Liberal party. Capt. Ewen McMillan, who was born at Cove Head, February 20, 1815, received his education there and took up the occupation of seafaring and ship building, having built and commanded sev- eral merchantmen and made many voyages. At the age of sixty years he retired from the seafaring life and thereafter followed the more peaceable pursuit of farming. He died in 1900. He was a Presbyterian in religion, being an elder in his church for half a century, and in politics was a Liberal. By his marriage to Isabella Matheson, a native of Scotland, he had the following children: Donald, deceased; Ronald, a mer- chant at Charlottetown; Hugh; John, the subject of this sketch; Margaret Ann, who became the wife of Daniel Miller, and Bar- bara, the wife of Arthur Wright.

John McMillan received his elementary education in the district schools of his neigh- bourhood and has followed agricultural pur- suits throughout his life, except for a short time at sea, making voyages to Europe, the West Indies and other places. He is the owner of one hundred and twenty acres of fine, well cultivated land in Lot 65 and here carries on a diversified system of agricul- ture, raising all the crops common to this latitude. On October 5, 1882, Mr. McMil- lan married Mrs. Reid, daughter of James A. and Elizabeth (Craig) Hamilton, of the Abbecorn Hamiltons, who came to Nova Scotia from Newton Stewart. north of Ire- land, in 1819, and located at Truro, where they followed farming. Mr. and Mrs. McMillan have six children, namely: Gladys, Louis, Cecil, Muriel, Allison and Marguerite. Mr. McMillan has always

taken an active interest in political matters and is a member of the Liberal party. He is now the member of Parliament for the second. district of Queens county, having been elected in 1904. He takes a deep interest in public affairs and lends his voice and influence in support of all measures cal- culated to promote the public good. He is an adherent of the Presbyterian church.

JAMES D. MCGUIGAN, M. D., who stands high in his profession in Queens county, is a native of Prince Edward Island, having been born at Kelly’s Cross on April 7, 1879. His paternal grandfather, William McGuigan, was a native of Ireland, where he was educated. In 1829 he emigrated to Prince Edward Island and located at Char- lottetown, where for some years he was suc- cessfully engaged in the retail grocery busi- ness. Subsequently he purchased a farm at Kelly’s Cross, to which he moved and there spent the remainder of his life, his death occurring in 1887, at the age of seventy-six years. He married Miss Isabella Clarkin, a native of Ireland, and they became the par- ents of several children, the only one now living being Peter, the father of the subject of this sketch. In religion he was a faithful member of the Catholic church, and in poli- tics a Conservative. Peter McGuigan, who was born in Charlottetown on September 10, 1843, received his education in the public schools of that city and subsequently took
