the casting of his ballot. He is a member of the church of the Advent at Boston, Massa- chusetts, and is a lay reader under the Nova Scotia see. Socially he is a member of the Boston Art Club. He is widely known and is popular throughout his circle of acquaint- ances, who have learned to regard him be- cause of his many estimable personal quali- ties. He took a strong interest in rifle shoot— ing and won his position on the team that defended the Palma against the United Eng- lish-Scotch-Irish team at Creedman, New York. He was on the team that went over to Ireland. He holds the American cham- pionship in long range shooting, and made some of the highest scores at long distance as well as off-hand.
CAPT. JAMES LANIGAN, merchant, ship owner and progressive farmer at Souris West, Kings county, was born at Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island. in 1846, and is a son of John and Ann (Farrell) Lan- igan. Captain Lanigan in his youth at— tended the public schools at Murray Har- bour and also studied navigation under the instructions of Samuel Peterson, who was at that time instructor of science for Kings county. In 1862 the subject went to sea and in 1866 took charge of a brigantine, called the “Anandale,” for Captain Foley, of Charlottetown. After sailing this vessel for five years he bought and built vessels of his own which he sailed up to 1903. During the interim from 1900 to 1904 Captain Lanigan had the contract for ripraping and repairing the Souris breakwater, which contract he performed to the entire satisfaction of the government. The Captain’s son, Lawrence, is now master of his father’s ship. Captain Lanigan has been an active and influential

supporter of the Liberal party, while in re- ligion he is a member of the Rollo Bay Cath- olic church. The Captain’s father, John Lanigan, who was a farmer and mason by profession, was a skilled workman and super- intended part of the stone work on the St. John’s (Newfoundland) cathedral, spend- ing four years on this contract. This is an immense building and is put up in a manner that reflects credit on the contractor. Mr Lanigan was a native of Tipperary county, Ireland, and immigrated to this Island in 183 5 on the brig “Pandora,” Captain Power, and died in 1895 at the age of eighty-six years. His mother. who was a native of Kil- kenny county, Ireland, died in 1902, at the age of eighty-seven and at the time of her death had seven children. seventy-nine grandchildren and thirty-nine great-grand- children. one hundred and eighteen descend- ants in all. Captain Lanigan has four brothers who are farmers at Murray Har- bour, Daniel. William, John and Michael.
Captain Lanigan married Miss Maggie Alice' Kickham, a daughter of Edward Kick- ham. a merchant and member of Parliament for Kings county, and to them have been born the following children: Hubert James, of Boston. Massachusetts; Lawrence. master of the schooner “Abana;” Minnie, the wife of Patrick Mullaly, of Souris: Mabel, at home; James P., of Souris West. and Elsie, at home. Captain Lanigan is a public spirited and progressive citizen in his attitude toward all matters affecting the interests of the com- munity and enjoys the absolute confidence and respect of all who know him.
