Mr. Leard was born at Tryon , Prince county, and is a son of John N . and Frances Leard , the latter a daughter of Samuel and Isabell (Muttart) Leard, of Cape Traverse . To these parents were bom the following children: Elijah, a hat mer¬ chant at , British Columbia ; Wil ¬ liam E .; Rufus Charles , who died in 1904, was a successful farmer at Tryon ; Norman W., a dentist, at , New Jersey ; John , M. D. , of , Boston, Massachusetts ; Rebecca died at the age "f seven years; Waldron is a merchant tailor at Souris ; Roland farms on the old home¬ stead, at Tryon ; Elizabeth, who is at home, was born to the father's second marriage, which was to Miss Jane Sellar , of , Lot 33. The subject's paternal great¬ grandfather, John Leard , was a native of this Island, his parents having come from County Antrim, Ireland, about a year before John was born, and his son John, the paternal grandfather, was a farmer at Tryon , Prince Edward Island . John N. Leard was born at Tryon in 1824 and is still living there, having devoted the greater part of his life to agricultural pursuits. The subject of this sketch received a good, practical education in the district school of his home neighbour¬ hood and ever since attaining to the years of manhood he has taken a leading part in the general activities of the communities in which he has resided. In addition to his connection with the mercantile business, above referred to Mr. Leard is secretary and treasurer of the Dundas Dairy Association, having a butter and cheese factory in opera¬ tion. He is a Conservative in politics and a member of the Methodist church, in the activities of which he takes a deep interest, having served as superintendent of the Sun¬ day school during the last thirteen years. Mr. Leard married Miss Annie Ayers , of , Lot 33, a daughter of Thomas and Maria (Sellers) Ayers. To Mr. and Mrs. Leard have been born two children, Harold and Ethel. Mr. Leard is a man of many fine personal qualities and stands high in the esteem of the public. John Mulally , a successful farmer and highly esteemed citizen of Souris West , Lot 44, Kings county, was born on Lot 45, and is a son of James Mulally , who, in 1829, came to Prince Edward Island from the parish of Mullinahoney, County Tipperary , Ireland, and settled at Souris East , where he took up land on the east side of Souris River in Lot 45. He was a successful farmer and during his residence there enjoyed the esteem and confidence of all who knew him. His death occurred on November 2, 1895, at the age of ninety years. At the time he entered upon this land it was wild and unimproved, but he succeeded in bringing the entire farm of four hundred acres to a high state of im¬ provement. He married in Ireland Miss Anastasia Fennely , a native of County Tip¬ perary, and together they came to this prov¬ ince, landing at Charlottetown on May 13, 1849. They became the parents of the fol¬ lowing children: Thomas, deceased; Mary, the wife of John Mulally , of Gowan Brae ; Valentine, a successful farmer at Lowe's West; Ellen, the wife of Lawrence Doyle , of St. Peter 's Bay; Kate, wife of Patrick Hughes ; Patrick, a successful builder, at
