5<>2 PAST AND PRESENT OF Frank A., who lives at home, is foreman for the Portland, Maine, Packing Company whose factory is located near by the sub¬ ject's land; Chester and Justin are students at College at Charlottetown ; Georgia, is engaged in teaching school near her father's residence; Beatrice is in the con¬ vent at Tignish ; Lesley is at home and op¬ erates the home farm; Gerald, who lives at home and is attending school. In politics Mr. McCarthy renders his support to the Conservative party and takes a deep interest in local public affairs, having served for many years as trustee'of the school, ten years as road supervisor and also as receiver of wrecks. His present success has been achieved solely by his own exertions, as he had the assistance of neither money nor influence and is therefore clearly entitled to that much abused appellation, self-made man. J. J. Arsenault , a well known merchant and enterprising citizen of Tignish , was born at , Prince Edward Island , on February i , 1863, and is a son of John and Mary (Deagle) Arsenault, the former having also been born at in 1823 and is still living and enjoying excellent health for a man of his age. To John and Mary Arsenault were born four children: Philomene became the wife of Thomas Perry ; J. J ., subject of this sketch; Robert, who resides on the old home place at ; Mary J., is the wife of John Bernard , who now lives in the United Staes. The father of these children is an ardent Liberal in politics and takes an intelligent interest in public affairs. The paternal grandfather, Joseph, who was born at Malpeque , Prince Edward Island , was a successful farmer through life and died in 1863 at . The subject of this sketch received, a good district school education and was reared to the life of a farmer, to which he devoted his attention for four years. He then began clerking in Myrick's store at Tig¬ nish, and on March 1, 1904, established him¬ self in his present business in which he has achieved a definite success. He is also engaged in farming, owning one hundred and sixty acres of splendid land, of which one hundred and thirty are under the plow. He gives his personal attention to every detail of his business enterprise and is accounted one of the enterprising and pro¬ gressive citizens of this community. He is a Liberal in politics and has served as census enumerator. In religion he is a Catholic, while fraternally he is a member of Lodge Number 28, Catholic Mutual Benefit Asso¬ ciation and Lodge Number 114, A. C. F. In 1886 Mr. Arsenault married Miss Made ¬ line Bernard, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Gellant) Bernard, the former of whom was born at and was a fanner by vocation. To this union have been born three children: Joseph, Rosalie and Alfred, who are living at home. Samuel Nicholson , a substantial citi¬ zen and well known farmer of Belle River , Lot 6 2, was born in Flat River , in January, 1853, and is a son of John and Catherine (Bell) Nicholson, who were the parents of six children, namely: Bella, John, Alex¬ ander, Samuel, Katherine and Mary. To Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson have been born seven children: Katie, at home; Belle, who resides in Boston, Massachusetts ; Alexina, at home; Jeanette is attending business col¬ lege at Charlottetown ; Emma, at home;
