twenty-two years, bringing a small stock of goods and locating at Travellers’ Rest. During the first 'few years he visited .Mira- michi, New Brunswick, spring and fall, in or- der to buy goods, and at the same time buy- ing produce from the farmers which was shipped to market in small schooners from Raynor’s Creek. In 1860 he removed to Summerside, where he built a store and resi- dence and acquired considerable other prop- erty. For many years he was one of the town’s prominent business men and during his lifetime he built some eight ships for the British market. While living at Travellers’ Rest, Mr. Muirhead entered actively into political life and succeeded the late Hon. Joseph Pope as representative of the fourth district of Prince county in the Provincial Legislature. During his term he assisted in securing the passage of one of the free educational measures. Shortly after he ar- rived in Summerside the Legislative Council was made elective and Mr. Muirhead was induced to run for the Upper House, in which he was successful, being elected by a majority of two to one over his opponent. So important was his election that he made a majority for his party in the Legislative Council, this being the first time in the his- tory of the province that that body was Liberal. Mr. Muirhead was a member of the Legislative Council for eight years, and then retired from political life. He was one of the founders of the‘ Summerside Bank and otherwise held an influential relation to his community. He was a Presbyterian in religious belief and was one of the found- ers of the church of that denomination in Summerside, while for fifteen years he was superintendent of the Sabbath school. Michigan; Mrs. J. D. Enman. of Summerside; Zillah, Jennie, Alexandra and John, at home. John was educated in the public schools and upon the completion of his studies he entered the em- ploy of J. A. Gourlie, druggist, with whom he remained five years. He then went to Montreal and for three years was in the em- ploy of Kenneth Campbell, (lruggist. Returning to Summerside he opend a drug store, which he successfully conducted until 1902. when he sold out to P. N. Enman and has since lived practically retired from active business life. He still maintains an active interest in public affairs. and is held in the highest regard by all.

THOMAS MCCABE, a successful farmer of Lot 26, Prince county, was born in West Newton in January, 1856, and is a son of Bernard McCabe, who was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1813. The father came to Prince Edward Island on the ship “Margaret Pollock” in 1841, locating at once in West Newton, where he followed farming throughout his life, although he was a spinningwheelwright by trade. He was a member of the Catholic church and in politics was an old school Liberal and served as postmaster at West Newton. His death occurred in 1891 and hiswidow is now living with the subject of this sketch.
