He is a Liberal in politics and has been a trustee of the Presbyterian church of Lot 14, and since its organization ten years ago has been record- ing secretary of Court \Vallec Independent Order of Foresters. He is also a member of the Masonic order and is now holding the position of senior warden of his lodge. Mr. Montgomery is a son of Donald and Christina (Woodside) Montgomery. Chris— tina was a daughter of Archibald and Bar- bara Montgomery. of \Voodside, the latter being a daughter of Hon. Donald Mont- gomery, of Malpeque, who was a member hood and died there in 1884, at the age of seventy years. The subject’s grandfather. Archibald Montgomery, who was born at Malpeque, married Miss Mary Ramsey, a daughter of Donald Ramsey, a native of Scotland, who was educated for the West Indies trade, but heated in Prince Edward Island with his father, John Ramsey. Don- ald Ramsey married a Miss McMillan. The subject’s paternal great-grandfather. Donald Montgomery, was a native of Argyleshire, Scotland. Senator Montgomery was a son of Donald Montgomery. and brother of the subject’s grandfather, Archibald Montgom- ery, and hence uncle of the subject’s father. William J. Montgomery married Miss Katie E. Stuart. a daughter of the Rev. William and Elizabeth (Ramsey) Stuart. Her mother was a daughter of the Hon. David Ramsey, who was a member of the Provincial Legislature from 1855 to 1867, and was in other ways one of the prominent men of his time, having been a merchant and shipbuilder at Port Hill. to them, and also supported the movement for free education and universal suffrage. Rev. William Stuart was born in Aberdeen- shire, Scotland, and was educated for the Presbyterian ministry. He is now pastor of the Reformed crurch of Nutley. New Jer- sey. To the subject and his wife have been born the following children: W illiam, Kenneth and Jean.
JOSEPH MCCAREY, who for more than twenty-five years has been connected with the postoflfice department at Charlottetown, is a native son of Prince Edward Island. having been born in Charlottetown, on Jan- uary I 5, 1864. His parents, Patrick and Margaret (Moinah) McCarey, were natives of Ireland and emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1852. Joseph McCarey attended Christian Brothers’ School at Charlottetown. completing his literary education at St. Dun- stan’s College and his business training in the Charlottetown Business College. On De- cember I, 1880, Mr. McCarey was appointed a clerk in the Charlottetown postofiice by order of the Governor General of Canada in council, and has since been continuously identified with this department. He has re— ceived a number of promotions and is consid- ered one of the most capable and trustworthy employees in the office. He is a man of staunch business qualifications and possesses many personal characteristics which have won for him the respect of his superiors and the good will and esteem of his fellow work- men with whom he is associated.
