trade. Large fishing fleets called at Souris, as many as one hundred and fifty vessels being in this port at one time. He was for 'many years a member of the Masonic fra- ternity, belonging to the blue lodge, also receiving the chapter degrees. For twenty— five years he was United States consular agent at Souris, He died in 1904, at the age of seventy years. being succeeded in July of that year, by the subject of this sketch, who now holds that office.

Mr. Carlton married Miss Matilda Jane Spencer, a native of Prince Edward Island, a daughter of James Spencer, who came here from Hull, England, locating at Char- lottetown, where he died. He was a promi- nent citizen of that city during his life, being engaged in business there. The subject of this sketch is active in local public affairs and for eighteen years has been secretary of the school board of Souris, and for six years secretary of the town council and for several terms has been an active member of these bodies. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, the Sons of Temperance, the In- dependent Order of Odd Fellows and the Independent Order of Foresters, while his religious connection is with the Methodist church. His mother now makes her home with him and is receiving at his hands every attention which filial love and veneration can suggest. Mr. Carlton is public spirited and progressive in his ideas and enjoys the respect of all who know him.

A. J. MATHESON, who is engaged in a successful and profitable drug business at

O’Leary, was born in Lot 33 and is a son of James and Margaret (Miller) Matheson, the father having also been a native of the

same locality. The paternal grandfather, Roderick Matheson, was born in Ross—shire, Scotland, and came to Prince Edward Island in 1806. The maternal grandfather, Alex Miller, was a native of Scotland, where he owned the Sea Mills at Burnt Island, and came to Prince Edward Island in 1850, locating in Lot 56, on a farm at Wilmot Creek. Subsequently he came to Lot 12 to build the England (then the Barclay) mills, at which time he also bought a farm in that locality, the one now owned and operated by his son, Peter Miller. Alexander Miller married, in Scotland, Miss Jeanette Crom- bie, of Burnt Island.

The subject of this sketch received his elementary education in the public schools of his native locality, supplementing this by attendance at Prince of Wales College, at Charlottetown. Hehas been engaged in the drug business in O’Leary for ten years during which time he has acquired an excel- lent reputation as a keen and sagacious business man and a man whose dealings with his fellow men have been characterized by a degree of fairness and justice which have commended him to their good opinions. He carries a large and comprehensive stock of the articles usually to be found in an up-to-date drug store and is enjoying a satisfactory business. In politics he is a Lib- eral. and his religious affiliation is with the Presbyterian church. He takes an active interest in the welfare of the community and lends his influence to every movement of a beneficent nature.
