He has a farm of two hundred twelve acres in Lot 50. nearly all of which is under cultivation and the place is well im- proved with substantial and commodious buildings, well kept fences and up-to—date and modern farming machinery. He carries on a diversified system of agriculture and has been eminently successful in his calling, being now considered a representative farm- er of his section of the county. Mr. Hayden has been twice married, first to Miss Jessie Ross, a daughter of Donald Ross, and to them were born three children: Sidney C., now on the Pacific coast; May. in Summer- ville, Boston, Massachusetts; and Lottie E. at home. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Hayden married Miss Margaret Mc- Leod. a daughter of \Villiam McLeod. of Vernon River Bridge. and to them also were born three children: Stella C., Adeline G. and Helen L., all at home. In politics Mr. Hayden is a staunch supporter of the Liberal party and holds the office of justice of the peace. In religion he is a member of the Methodist church and holds an oflicial position on the quarterly board. He is a man of unostentatious manner but is influential in his community, ever standing on the side of right and encouraging in every way the movements having for their object the advancement of the community's best interests.
LESTER HAYDEN. a well-to-do and suc- cessful merchant at Vernon River, was born at this place December 31. 1860, and is a son of James and Maria (Burke) Hayden. The paternal great—grandfather was James Hayden and the grandparents were Alexan- der and Jane (Hitchcock) Hayden, the for-

mer having been born at Charlottetown and followed ship building there throughout his active life. He and his wife were the par- ents of twelve children: Maria, Phoebe, James, Jane, Eliza, Alex, Fred, John, Wil- liam. Caroline, Ann and Fanny. Alexander Hayden was a member of the Church of England and in politics a Liberal. James Hayden was born at Charlottestown in 1818 and was there educated. He learned ship building under his father’s instructions and for many years followed that pursuit, build- ing ships at East River, Boston and Phila- delphia. The last forty years of his life were spent at Vernon River, where he en- gaged successfully in the mercantile busi- ness. He married Miss Maria Burke, a daughter of John Roche Burke. and to them were born three children: Seymour, who died at the age of nineteen years; Adele, the wife of Judge Neil McLeod, of Summer— side; and Lester, of this sketch. James Hay- den was a member of the Methodist church, and a Liberal in politics. His death oc— curred on March 15, 1896, and his wife is now living at Vernon River.
Lester Hayden attended the schools at Vemon River and also St. Peter's, at Char— lottetown. Since attaining mature years, he has been successfully engaged in mer- cantile business at Charlottetown, and is numbered among the leading business men of this community. In addition to his mer- cantile interests he has a farm of thirty acres, all of which is under cultivation and on which are raised abundant crops of all the products common to this locality. On August 29. 1884, Mr. Hayden married Miss Christina Sutherland, a daughter of George Sutherland, of Cardigan, and they have be- come the parents of four children, Myrtle, Lee. Adele and Glenwood. Mr. Hayden is
