Charlottetown gives the visitor a vague surprise. That is quite a natural reaction. People from other parts of Canada and the United States see Charlotte- town, in their mind’s eye, as a busy commercial city, the capital of a Province. Naturally, then, they are surprised when they find a compact little town with the trimmings and elegancies of a capital city.

I stood in the centre of the mile-long Hillsborough Bridge and reviewed the city thoughtfully. Was I dreaming or was Charlottetown actually moving? It seemed to be swinging nearer and nearer. Right! Charlottetown was coming nearer because the section of the bridge on which I was standing had been opened to let a steamer pass. Nearer and nearer . came Charlottetown. Then it stopped.
