A LEGEND OF GENERAL WOLFE 251

“Yes, if it was Kidd’s treasure. Did you ever hear

the sea guns? "

“What sea guns?” Here. They sound like three or four or sometimes

five cannon shots. Sometimes there will be an interval of half an hour between the booms.”

“You’re spoofing. Who ever heard of sea guns?”

“It’s a fact. They are usually heard in the spring after the ice goes. The sound seems to come from the south, but over in New Brunswick they say it is from the north.”

I must have looked incredulous, for he continued earnestly—

”Boats have sailed out into the Strait trying to locate the boom.

“Did they find it?”

”No . . . but . . .”

“Well . . .! Do you suppose these sea guns are fired by the denizens of the deep to salute the arrival of the buccaneer spirits in their good ship

Phantom?”

“Perhaps . . .,” the fisherman admitted doubt- fully. “Ask any people who live around here and they’ll tell you it’s a fact. There are sea guns and

. . look!” he pointed excitedly.

Down the Strait sailed a ship on fire. Slowly it glided . . . On and on she went and passed out of sight beyond the point

The phantom ship!

Boy, ain’t she a heller ! " a chap behind me whispered excitedly to his girl.

“Ain’t she!” I echoed with the girl.

Now to come back to General Wolfe, who, it is said, did not call at Prince Edward Island.
