Chapter XII ALL ROADS LEAD TO We go where all roads lead— Enmore ; tour around Summerside and cross to Bedeque . We see Borden again and embark on the car ferry. ALL roads lead to Enmore . It is a fact, strange r-\ as it seems, although few people ever have any ambition to go to Enmore . Coast down the western road and you will notice at least five signs all promising to lead to the rarely visited district of Enmore . Enmore brings back memories . . . memories of a persistent and indomitable Earl who fussed and fumed at the Board of Trade and requested as a gift this island of Prince Edward. He was not only the Earl of Egmont, he was also Baron Lovel and Holland of Enmore , Somerset. So this district is peculiarly and particularly Egmontish. I wonder if all those signs are due to his mystical suggestion— seeking to inflate his property with the feeling of importance. I wonder if it is in this place that Egmont 's spirit hovers. The district, however, like his schemes, has never seemed to come up to his expectations. Poor, disappointed Egmont ! This is the most enterprising town of the Island, and it buzzes with activity. It has aeroplane service with the mainland, a new Academy, and stores which rival any east of Montreal. Summerside is truly the commercial capital of Prince Edward Island ! And what of its future? I wonder if it can ever grow, hemmed in as it is by fox ranches on every side. 256
