fond of berries and honey as are boys and girls. They will eat the honeycomb with the honey and will eat the bees too if they do not get out of their nest quickly. The bees sting them on the nose and eyes but it does not hurt them much. Bears like beech and hazel nuts,

but they like meat best. How The Bear Drove the Pig to the Slaughter H ouse

One night a neighbour heard his pig squealing in a peculiar way; it gave short sharp squeals that each time grew fainter. The man went out to see what was the matter with it. He saw a bear driving the pig to the woods. That was a sagacious old bear. The pig was too heavy for him to carry, and would make too much noise, so "Bruin” made it walk on its own legs to the place where he wanted to kill and eat it. When the pig tried to turn back, or to one side, the bear would give it a slap on the ear to make it go the way he wanted it to. Every time he would give it a slap the pig would squeal. A bear hits a very hard blow with its front paws, and its claws are sharp.

From our house we could see them by day and hear them at night. The cubs would make a little grunting sound like hungry little pigs folloWing their mother. The big boys often captured bear cubs. They would grow up and be quite tame but they were a great bother, and when grown big were dangerous, especially where there were children. We could never trust them as we could trust a dog. Domesticated animals always disliked them. The old bears would often come at night to get the cubs away and they or their tracks would frequently be seen near the house. We were afraid to go outside the door at night.

One day I was riding on horseback on a lonely wood road, when a big bear came out of the woods in front of me; he crossed the road and I kept on. The horse was not afraid until he came near where the bear crossed the road; when he smelled the strong bear smell, he went wild. , I held on for dear life; if I were thrown off his back I would be alone in the woods with. the bear, and that would be a terri- fying situation.

When a big bear would be suddenly alarmed it would give a shrill whistle, like a boy would give with his fingers in his mouth.
