relieved the pain. This was a fact but I am not able to explain the mystery of it. His imagination would not be a sufficient explanation. While he was unable to run about, he amused himself by playing the fiddle; that was how he became so skilful in playing it. This was a good example of how one can make profitable use of time when in- capacitated for on-e’s usual Work. His music was a source of comfort and enjoyment to himself and his friends and neighbours. His name was William but after he got well we called him “Billy nine toes”. He never could run so fast, or jump so far after losing his toe. Much of a boy’s speed and spring is in his toes. The loss of one handicaps him for any kind of speedy work on foot. It is a serious loss to a speedy boy, but he can take up some other amusement as that boy did and keep happy and help make others happy.
How the Pig Got Fooled by the Hollow Log
A neighbour had a large pig that he turned out to‘the road, or the commons, in summer. It would get into his field and, for a long time, he could not find where it got in. One day he hid and watched to see if he could discover the secret passage where it got in. He had a fence made of stumps; in this fence there was a large hollow log. He saw the pig poking along the fence, and when it came to this hollow log it stopped and looked about, as if to see if any one was watching; it then entered at the endd’f the log and came through and out at the other end, which was in the field. The man drove the pig out as usual. It never would go out the way it came in. He toOk the log out of the fence and left it near to see what the pig would do when it came again. Soon he saw it coming. The pig came to the log and, after surveying the surroundings, went in at the hole as it did before; but when it came out at the other end and found it was not in the field it seemed perplexed. It tried again but with no better results. It went through the log several times before it gave up trying. It was a case where pig-headedness failed of success.
