In the year 1865, Mr. Joseph Bertram set up a printing office at Summerside and began publication of the Summerside Journal. Contributions to The Journal, in its early stages, were made by Mr. Charles W. Strong , who was subsequently associated with Mr. Bertram in the publication of the paper, by Mr. Henry Law- son, Mr. W. L. Cotton , and others; and it grew in circulation and influence until the year 1872, when, upon the death of Mr. Bertram , it was sold to Messrs. Graves & McMurtry . This firm continued the publication of The Journal until 1875, when it was dissolved by Mr. McMurtry 's death. Mr. W. A. Brennan , a son of the last proprietor and editor of The Islander , then entered into partner¬ ship with Mr. Graves , under the firm name of Graves & Company; and in 1880, Mr. Brennan obtained sole control of the paper, which his family has since held. In 1882, Mr. Brennan established The Agriculturalist, devoted especially to the interests of farmers and horsemen. Despite the fact that his plant and office materials were twice swept away by fire, neither the Journal nor The Agri¬ culturalist ever missed the publication of any issue. Mr. Brennan was, for many years greatly assisted in the editorial department by Mr. S. M. Bent , who died at his post in 1904. After that year the directing force of The Summerside Journal and The Agricultur¬ alist was Mr. Arthur Brennan , and the editor is Mr. John J. En- man, an experienced and popular writer and journalist. The Progress was established at Summerside by Mr. Thomas Kirwan. After some time the property passed into possession of the late Robert T. Holman who employed Mr. Henry Lawson and Mr. Thomas Gorman , successively, to edit the newspaper and fight the battles of the Liberal party in . The Pro¬ gress was succeeded by The Pioneer, first published at Alberton by Mr. John L. McKinnon , and subsequently removed to Sum¬ merside in the year 1880. Afterwards it passed into the hands of a company and was published in support of the Liberal party. Connected with it is "The Island Farmer/' Its editors included Mr. B. D.
