IOUR ISLAND STORY ' 1'15
tablished under its auspices at. Falconwood, about three miles from Charlottetown. This farm was for some years a centre of
agricultural improvement. Horses, cattle, sheep and swine of the most improved breeds were imported and their progeny were dis-
tributed throughout the Island. Pure bred animals, when a few i
months old, were sent to the chief towns in the three counties and sold by auction to the highest bidder, on condition that they should not be exported from the province so long as they were useful as breeders. _ '
In the meantime personal enterprise had established several excellent herds. Mr. Benjamin Heartz imported from Holland a number of Holsteins, the progeny of which have entered into several fine herds in various parts of the Province. Subsequently the same Mr. Heartz purchased Jersey cattle from the famous herd of Mrs. Jones, of Brockville, Ontario, and supplemented them with several judiciously selected Jerseys and Guernseys imported directly from the Channel Islands—so adding materially to the Island’s dairy requirements. Other Guernsey cattle were purchased and imported by Mr. E. R. Brow, of Charlottetown; and from these there has been developed the prize Winning herd of Messrs. Roper Brothers, Charlottetown Royalty. Mr. 'Easton
of Charlottetown Royalty, Mr. Brown of Marshfield, the Rev. ,
' Dr. Walker, of Rollo Bay, and many others have been successful importers and breeders of Ayrshires, famed for hardiness, as well as for their ability to produce excellent milk. Mr. Walter M. Lea, of Bedeque, Mr. Walter I. Jones, of Bunbury Farm, and others have . developed fine herds of Holsteins. 'Mr. William Clark, of North Wiltshire, is the owner of: a herd of first—class Jer— sey cattle; and Mr. Frank Glydon, of Margate, makes a creditable show of the same excellent class of milk cattle.
Of beef cattle the late Dir. Fred G. Bovyer, Georgetown ' Royalty, was for many years a leading breeder and exhibitor,— and his herd of Shorthorns was the source of many of the fine cattle now seen in all parts of the Island. The late Mr. John Richards, 0f Bideford, in Prince County, imported from Scotland a herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle equal in quality to any herd in Canada; and the late Senator-Yeo, of Port Hill, imported and bred Hereford
cattle of the best class.
