competitors. In the way here set forth and by the importation of pure bred
farm stock of the best classes, by the importation of the seeds of plants-adapted to the climate, soil and needs of the Island, by the purchase of farm implements of the best kinds available, by the issue of literature affording information concerning the principles
. of agriculture and explanatory of the methods preferred by success-
ful farmers, the Royal Agricultural Society of Prince Edward Is- land encouraged and promoted the interests of the people. The memory of those who took leading parts in its activities is entitled to the respect of succeeding generations. '
Exhibitions, or fairs, such as those here described were held under the auspices of the Royal Agricultural Society, year by year, until 1865. After that year they were continued under the direc- tion of a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Government. Of this Board the Hon. Mr. Justice Hensley was Chairman, and Mr. Archibald McNeill, Secretary and chief executive officer. Late in the sixties County Exhibitions were held in Summerside
and Georgetown. The exhibition in Charlottetown continued to be open to
