BELLE RIVER UNITED CHURCH

Situated on a slight incline against a background of evergreen trees, St. Andrew's United Church, Belle River, originated in 1925, and was organized in 1926, following the Canadian union of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches. Twenty—three (23) families, formerly members of the Wood Islands, Belfast and Caledonia Presbyterian congregations joined together to form the new congregation and to construct the present St. Andrew's United Church.

The building itself goes back to the 1900's, when the Belle River Dairing Co. erected a building in Jhich cheese was made for a number of years. With the shell of this old building servzng as the base, renovations were carried on steadil . The church windows were obtained from the old Valleyfield Church, which was neing dismantled. Some pews came from a church in Murray Harbour, and to match these, others were hand constructed by Peter Emery of a neighbouring district. The interior was completely finished in Douglas Fir. During the first years, the pulpit and chair were situated on the north end of the church, opposite to where they are today. It is suffice to say that over the years many improvements were made in the structure to make it worthy of its high purpose which is still evident today.
